Woman gets 15 months for stealing $785,000 from her employer

A former assistant manager for First American Title Insurance of Portland has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for embezzling almost $800,000 from the escrow accounts of some of the company’s customers.

West Linn - During sentencing for stealing $1.4 million, the city's former
finance chief talks of "terrible shame"
OREGON CITY -- Elma Magkamit, the former West Linn finance director who stole
$1.4 million from the city to support a gambling habit and a lifestyle that included
clothing from Ralph Lauren, gifts and $17,000 worth of jewelry, was sentenced to
more than eight years in prison Friday.

Treatment - Oregon Lottery games that allow solitude produce a new set of problem gamblers, often resulting in costly and severe consequences

As the rain whips leaves against the window, 10 women gathered around a conference room table describe how gambling destroyed their lives.

"I went through my daughter's college fund," says one.

"I've committed crimes, stolen from employers, lost $100,000," says another.

House votes down weakened “reform” bill regarding off-reservation casinos

Today, the House of Representatives voted to reject a bill that would have given a free pass to a proposal for a 600,000-square-foot casino complex in the heart of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area.

Tribe must study on-reservation site

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a setback for an Oregon tribe hoping to build a casino in the Columbia River Gorge, the Interior Department is requiring that the tribe study an alternative site on its Central Oregon reservation.
